Many ways can be done to determine the risk of an illness. But for both men know the waist size can be the key to whether he is at high risk of disease or not. Waist size of a man who reached 101.6 cm or more is included in the danger zone.
American Dietetic Association (ADA) says that men can get significant health benefits by observing the size of his waistline and reduce the existing excess fat. Experts reveal to men, has an average waist size of 40 inches (101.6 cm) indicates that it is putting itself into the 'zone of risk' or disease-risk zone.
"Men need to know the size of his waistline, he knows just as important as blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and weight," said Jim White as a nutritionist from the ADA, as quoted from HealthDay, Tuesday (21/06/2011).
The size of a large waist circumference indicate the presence of excess belly fat. Fat that accumulates in the body can increase the risk of male against several diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and some cancers.
Fat around the stomach area is known as visceral fat. These fats can lead to insulin resistance, unhealthy cholesterol and may also increase inflammation.
To measure the waist size correctly, White gave some tips are:
- Try standing up while relaxing the abdominal muscles
- Place the measuring tape or meter stick directly on the skin the waist
- Place the measuring tape just above the navel until it surrounds the abdominal
- Do not pull the tape measure too tight or too loose
- Look at the numbers
If you find that the results obtained are close to or even exceeding 101.6 cm, then start to reduce it by eating better, reducing stress, physical activity and getting enough sleep each day.
